Tandem Diabetes T:slim X2 Insulin Pump Overview

In the Summer of 2018, Tandem Diabetes launched the T:slim X2 Insulin pump. This insulin pump stands out from all of the other insulin pumps because of its touchscreen, easy-to-use and friendly user interface, small size, lots of key data available on device, and ability to update software like a cellphone.

We decided to take a deeper look at the T:slim X2 Insulin pump and overview all of the key features available as of Spring 2021. Let’s go!

Tandem T:slim X2’s Key Features

  • Easy to use, intuitive, touchscreen interface. Interacting with the pump is super easy, you use it like you use your smartphone. You just click on the screen and access all of the features the pump provides

  • Basal-IQ technology – predicts and helps reduce the frequency and duration of low-glucose events. This simple-to-use system operates in the background without constant input.
  • CONTROL-IQ technology- advanced hybrid closed-loop technology adjusts insulin delivery to help prevent highs and lows, while still allowing the user to manually bolus for meals.
  • Can be integrated with a Dexcom continuous glucose monitor to power the Basal-IQ and Control-IQ technology

Control-IQ Technology Overview

The t:slim X2 insulin pump with Control‑IQ technology is designed to help increase time in range (3.9-10.0 mmol/L) using Dexcom G6 CGM values to predict glucose levels 30 minutes ahead and adjust insulin delivery.

AUTOMATIC INSULIN ADJUSTMENTS

The system automatically adjusts insulin levels based on Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) readings (sold separately).*

Tandem Diabates Control IQ3

This system works by using Dexcom G6 CGM values to predict glucose levels 30 minutes ahead and adjust insulin delivery accordingly.

Note that according to Tandem Diabetes, the Control-IQ technology should not be used by anyone under the age of six years old. It should also not be used in users who require less than 10 units of insulin per day or who weigh less than 25 kilograms, and it is not approved for use in every country.

Basal-IQ Technology Overview

The Basal-IQ system uses Dexcom G6 CGM data to predict if glucose levels will be low and temporarily cuts basal insulin delivery until the glucose levels return to safe levels before continuing to deliver insulin, this preventing what would have been a low event. The beauty of this is system is that it works completely in the background, there are no alerts that sound, and no user input is required. All a user has to do is turn the feature on and let the pump do all of the work.
