The Province of Ontario Is Now Covering Continuous Glucose Monitors

Great news if you live in Ontario, Canada and have type 1 diabetes. The Ontario Government has announced that as of March 14, 2022, eligible Ontarians with type 1 diabetes can get coverage for continuous glucose monitor and the related supplies.

Ontario joins 5 other provinces in covering CGM expenses. This is great news, and will make it much easier for those with type one diabetes to be able to get coverage for state of the art CGM’s like Dexcom’s G6 and the Freestyle Libre 2.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Live in Ontario
  • Have type 1 diabetes
  • Must first be assessed by the health care team from an ADP-registered Diabetes Education Program.
  • Applicant had severe hypoglycemia in the past 2 years without an obvious
    • precipitant, despite optimized use of insulin therapy and glucose monitoring (at
    • least 4 times/day) which result in one of the following:
    • i. suspension of the applicant’s driving licence;
    • ii. hospitalization or emergency room or EMS visit; or
    • iii. glucagon administration, unconsciousness, or seizure
  • Applicant demonstrates experience with and commitment to managing blood sugar
    control and an ability to use a real-time Continuous Glucose Monitor (rtCGM) safely and
    effectively by ALL of the following.
    • a. Applicant demonstrates a commitment to long-term diabetes follow-up through
      regular assessments by diabetes educators, and prescribers at intervals deemed
      appropriate by their ADP-registered Diabetes Education Program.
    • b. Applicant agrees to wear the rtCGM full-time.
    • c. Applicant agrees to share the data components of the Ambulatory Glucose Profile
      with the diabetes health care providers/team such as:
      • percent time in target range, percent time above or below target range,
      percent time in hypoglycemia; and
